No matter what type of mask you're looking for, we have something to suit your need! Why do we mask in New Orleans? Masking became popular in New Orleans through the Mardi Gras clubs, or Krewes. In the 1800s they were very secretive, exclusive organizations, and no one really knew who belonged- but everyone speculated. When they paraded, they wore masks to protect their identities, and it was all taken very seriously. In fact, in 1992, when a law was passed demanding more open Krewe membership and regulations three of the oldest and most revered clubs chose to stop parading rather than comply! But long before then Mardi Gras revellers had decided that what was good for the goose was good for the gander- they'd been costuming and masking for over a century, and it continues to this day! |
